Design Patterns in Practice
When it comes time to build a new web site, why reinvent the wheel? Does every design initiative have to start from scratch? Many development teams are struggling with this problem—how to transfer their design experience and hard lessons they’ve learned from project to project.
Development teams typically turn to guidelines, style guides, and templates to bootstrap new projects. However, these strategies take a “one-size-fits-all” approach to design; they are too simplistic to solve the complex design problems faced by today’s developers. Our “Design Patterns In Practice” tutorial is intended for development teams that have been trying to emulate the “best practices” of web sites, but can’t find a guide that always works.
Douglas K. van Duyne, designer and presenter of the tutorial, is one of the authors of the book, The Design of Sites, which provides a solid foundation that enables web site developers to learn from past designs.
By researching hundreds of web sites and examining the behaviors of hundreds of users, we’ve identified the core patterns that emerge from user experiences—ranging from how users look for content on large, information-rich web sites to how they interact with graphical user interfaces. The most successful sites incorporate these patterns into their designs.
Training Duration
In this full-day seminar, held at our facility or yours, Douglas shares his insights, introducing you to the core design patterns that contribute to user success on web sites. He demonstrates how to move beyond crude guidelines to develop your own patterns. You’ll also learn the essential techniques and tools you’ll need to build design patterns specifically tailored to meet your organization’s needs.
Learning Objectives
In this tutorial, participants will achieve the following objectives:
- Learn the core principles and best practices that make successful web sites. Based on in-depth research of hundreds of web sites, Douglas will share a complete set of design patterns that offers proven solutions to your biggest design challenges.
- Get a detailed introduction to the concept of Design Patterns. Based on a framework developed by revolutionary architect Christopher Alexander, design patterns provide a set of “best practice” starting points for your web site.
- Learn how to evaluate existing designs using design patterns. You will learn how to use design patterns to quickly evaluate why customers are having problems using your current web sites.
- Learn how to create and refine your own patterns for your sites. Using detailed case studies and hands-on exercises, you will learn how to build design patterns specifically tailored to your organization’s needs.
- Learn how design patterns can communicate design ideas. Design patterns will become a language that can you can use to effectively communicate design ideas among team members, whether they are designers, engineers, or marketers.
